LIFEGUARD
Recreation Department
Salary: $7.00 - $ 8.00 per hour
Requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old. Must have current Red Cross Lifeguard Training or equivalent. Will be required to pass test given by the City.
Job Duties:
Rescues swimmers (lifesaving procedures, first aid, etc.); monitors pool activities and enforces rules; assists in maintaining cleanliness/appearance of pool facilities. Performing cashier duties (accurate accounting and safekeeping of revenues received), greeting patrons, answering phone courteously and professionally, compiling accurate reports, controlling admission to the pool facilities.
Functional Requirements:
Sitting, walking, standing, infrequent weight lifting requirements; walking and standing is 80 – 90% of day; general conditioning by lifeguard certification. Stair climbing; pushing/pulling up to 60 lbs.; near/far vision. Job is related to environmental conditions, including excessive heat.
Lifeguard Prerequisites and Class Dates:
- Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order"
- 100 yards front crawl (freestyle) using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing may be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front.
- 100 yards breaststroke using a CLEAR pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
- 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke, or a combination of the two.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards; surface dive approximately 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound brick, return to the surface; swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the brick; and exit the water without using ladder or steps within 1 minute 40 seconds.
- Candidates MUST pass the Pre-Test to participate in Lifeguard Course.
- Participants should wear appropriate swim suits: one piece for women; non-sagging suits for men. This is a safety issue.
Note: Goggles may be worn for the 300 yard swim only. For the remainder of the course, no goggles, no exceptions!
Lifeguard Course
All classes will be held at Midway Recreation Center or Midway Pool. The dates are as follows. Must attend all the dates and pass written and practical exams to receive certification. $90
- Sunday, May 4th, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- Friday, May 9th, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
- Saturday, May 10th, Begins at 9 a.m.
- Sunday, May 11th, Begins at 9 a.m.
